Who is this RYA Professional Practices Responsibilities (PPR) Coastal Safety online learning course for?

Each year many people wishing to operate in a commercial capacity,  apply to the RYA for a commercial endorsement of their RYA qualifications to legally and professionally act as skipper or crew.

You could be doing anything from delivering a new 35’ or 65’ yacht or driving a commercial workboat with lifting and towing gear, to running a superyacht or even working as safety boat crew.

The Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) Course is an online course that you need to complete as part of the qualifications to gain a commercial endorsement.

It is a study of the legal environment you will be working under and requires study of various documents including MGN280.

This is a comprehensive course with several modules to work through including Commercial Environment, People, Purpose and Vessel.

You can complete the modules in one sitting or over a period of time and there is a final timed assessment. The timescale is up to you.

This online course gives you the knowledge and shows you where to get up to date and relevant information so that you are protected and prepared.

The online “learning” section of the course is split into 4 modules.

1. Commercial environment – showing how you fit into the professional maritime world

2. People – explaining the importance of correct manning, keeping skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels

3. Vessel – teaching about the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment, and how to create an implement risk control and operating procedures

4. Purpose – making sure the vessel is suitable and legal for the work, obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness

At the end of these four training modules will come two online assessments.

Revalidation Notes

From April 2012 anyone wishing to re-validate or apply for the commercial endorsement must complete the online PPR course first.

This applies to the following certificates:

  • Yachtmaster Ocean
  • Yachtmaster Offshore
  • Yachtmaster Coastal Day Skipper practical (tidal)
  • Day Skipper practical (non-tidal) supported by Day Skipper shorebased
  • Advanced Powerboat Course Completion Certificate (only if issued before 1st Jan 2005)
  • Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence
  • Powerboat level 2

While we can’t teach the specific rules for every type of operation, the course will help you understand and execute your duty of care, and give you principles, guidance and techniques to help make the right choices and decisions.
